Our history
Paldiski Design Studio is a youth art project, which was founded in 1995 by artist, and teacher Olga Shehereva. The project officially registered as a non- profit organization and offers creative art classes to youngsters between 6 and 25.
In these courses the children are taught the basics of composition, art history, perspective and various painting techniques, drawing, plastic and computer graphic. In the early days of Design Studio, resources were so scarce that a class would have to sit around one big piece of paper and create a single picture together. But what began as dire necessity has been developed into a pedagogical concept, which teaches the children more than just painting: in this collective process of creation they learn social skills, the importance of team work and how as individuals to relate to society as a whole.
The children are painting together focused on a general theme that they themselves attach meaning to. Their different characters, moods, ages, dispositions, and most importantly, their different perception of the world all together decide the outcome of the creative process.
The surface is gradually filled by different forms and colors, and when the paper is covered, the children create the smaller details. In this process, they try to react not only to their own inner voice, but also to other children's input, thereby seeking a balance between the role of the individual and the community.
The role of the teacher resembles much that of the conductor of an orchestra, helping to create harmony among the artists by helping with composition, color, and other aspects of the artistic process. The resulting pictures radiate sun, energy, and light.
